AROUND THE SLIAC

Blackburn College

The Blackburn basketball teams were both picked 9th in the SLIAC Basketball Preseason Polls. The men's team picked up 26 points in this year's poll after finishing 12-13 overall last season, the program's best record since 2005. The women's team received nine points and will be led by first-year head coach Jim Chandler.

Eureka College

The Eureka Red Devil women's basketball team, the defending SLIAC Champions, will begin their title defense on Wednesday against Knox. The Red Devils were picked 2nd in this year's preseason poll and return four starters while bringing in a new head coach, Amos Arbogast. The Red Devils were 20-8 overall last season and won the program's first-ever conference title.

Fontbonne University

Fontbonne University's Meredith Wendt was named to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, marking the first time in program history a Griffin has received First Team honors. Wendt, a senior forward for Fontbonne University, maintains a 3.94 GPA while majoring in Psychology. This past fall she helped Fontbonne to the SLIAC Tournament Championship game while recording a career-high 16 goals and being named SLIAC First Team All-Conference.

Greenville University

The Greenville volleyball team had their season come to an end in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament, falling to Millikin 3-0. The Panthers managed just 12 kills in the three sets while Millikin hit .429 as a team. Sarah Watts and Brittni Bell led Greenville with three kills each while Allyson Mitchell finished with a team-high six digs.

Iowa Wesleyan University

The Tigers men's basketball team was picked 8th in this years SLIAC Preseason Poll, receiving 34 total points. The Tigers will have to overcome the loss of the Soukup twins and bring back two starters from last year's team that finished 18-9 overall.

MacMurray College

The MacMurray College men's basketball team is expected to make a big jump this year. After finishing in 9th place last year, the Highlanders were picked 2nd in the preseason poll. That jump is in large part due to returning big man Brent Long, the return of guard Mike Cameron (who missed last year with an injury), and the addition of transfer Kendall Davis.

Principia College

Last weekend a trio of Principia runners qualified for the Division III Cross Country Nationals and will have the opportunity to race on their home course as Principia College will host the championships. Zach Mattiesen, Nate Richards, and Shane Witters Hicks will all have a large fan base this weekend in Elsah as the trio competes in the championship race.

Spalding University

The Spalding basketball teams had identical finishes in the SLIAC preseason poll, fifth place. The women's team went 13-11 overall last year and return nine players but just two starters. The men's team was 6-20 overall last season, marking the first time in four years they failed to qualify for the conference tournament.

Webster University

Brianna Pagan picked up CoSIDA Academic All-District honors this fall. Pagan holds a GPA of 3.89 while majoring in Mathematics and Computer Science. Pagan recorded five goals and six assists this past fall while earning SLIAC First Team All-Conference honors. She also helped the Gorloks to their second consecutive NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.

Westminster College

After going into halftime down 2-0 to Wisconsin-Platteville in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament, the Blue Jays saw their season fade away with three more second-half goals by Wisconsin-Platteville. Westminster was outshot 22-12 in the game and managed just five shots on goal.
