Dr. Lyman (Lee) Ellis, Principia College Director of Athletics, will transition from his administrative role into a more active teaching role as a full-time academic faculty member and Special Advisor to the Provost. In August, Ellis earned an Ed.D. in Education at the University of Missouri, St. Louis.
"I am deeply grateful for Lee's 20 years of dedicated service to Principia and look forward to his expanded role within our academic program," says College Provost Dr. Joseph Ritter. "The completion of his doctorate in education with a focus on character education motivated me to ask Lee to serve the institution in ways that are more in line with his recent professional development. To that end, starting in fall 2017, Lee will teach—including courses in leadership, coaching, and character education—and potentially coach."
During nine years as Director of Athletics, Ellis oversaw numerous improvements to the athletics program, including the establishment of the Gold & Blue Athletic Club and summer sports camps. He was instrumental in improving the quality of the coaching staff and established women's softball and women's beach volleyball programs to support student interest. He also directed significant improvements to Principia's sports facilities, including re-branding Hay Field House, constructing a softball field, upgrading the baseball field and building press box and stadium spectator seating, beginning construction of a rugby performance field, and constructing a championship cross-country venue that will serve as host site for the 2016 NAIA Nationals and 2017 NCAA III Nationals.
While serving as Head Coach of women's soccer, Ellis posted a record of 208-84-10 (.705) over 15 years, establishing him as Principia's winningest coach. Ellis will continue to oversee Principia College's athletics program until the conclusion of a national search for a new Director of Athletics.
