AROUND THE SLIAC

The Blackburn men's basketball team notched their first win of the season on Saturday with an 81-68 win over Illinois Tech. The Beavers shot just 38-percent in the game but forced 29 turnovers and got to the free-throw line 37 times. Four players scored in double figures with Chris Davis leading the way with 16 points.

The Eureka College baseball program will hold a Winter Hitting Camp December 27th through December 29th and be split up into a morning and an afternoon session. Hitting sessions will focus on grip, stance, proper load, balance and weight transfer throughout the swing, as well as approach and the mental side of hitting. Cost is $75.00 per camper and will include a camp t-shirt.

Emmie Haring, a sophomore guard from Ballwin, Mo., was named SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week this week after helping the Griffins to a 93-88 win over Knox. Haring was in the giving mood, finishing the game with 12 assists; tying the program record for assists in a game. Haring accounted for 34 of the Griffins points as she added 10 points herself on 4-of-7 shooting while also grabbing six rebounds and adding three steals.

The Greenville women's basketball team picked up their first win of the year in their last outing and will look to continue that streak when they host Spalding and Westminster this week. In fact the Panthers have a six game stretch at home and are not on the road again until the New Year. Greenville is currently 1-2 on the season.

Iowa Wesleyan College has launched a new athletic website. The new site features an updated design with user friendly features including a Tiger athletic apparel store and Hall of Fame section. Check out the new Tigers website at http://www.iwctigers.com/index.php

The MacMurray College basketball teams are partnering with the West Central Illinois Leathernecks Marine Corps League #1177 Saturday afternoon, Dec. 6, for a Toys for Tots donation drive in Bill Wall Gymnasium. Fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to Saturday’s MacMurray College women’s and men’s conference basketball games against Spalding University.  The women’s game tips off at 1 p.m. and the men’s game follows at 3 p.m.

Principia College's Nate Richards recently competed at the NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championship. Richards was one of 280 competitors and pushed near the top mid-way through the race, in 18th place. However Richards fell back and finished 39th overall.

Brandon Gabriel and Brandon Goeing combined for 34 points to lead the Spalding men's basketball team to an 80-63 win over Transylvania last Saturday. Gabriel and Goeing each scored 17 points while Renaldo Moore added 15 points and a game high seven rebounds.

Hunter Ward, a sophomore guard from St. Louis, Mo., was named SLIAC Men's Basketball Player the Week this week after helping the Gorloks to a pair of wins on the week including keying a come from behind victory over Loras. Trailing 72-56 with just over three-minutes left in the game Ward knocked down three consecutive three-pointers  in a 31-second span to spark the Gorloks. Ward knocked down a fourth three-pointer with 17-seconds left to tie the game, with Webster eventually winning in overtime. On the week Ward averaged 16.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game while shooting 47.8-percent from the field with nine total three-pointers.
The Westminster women's basketball team will look to start SLIAC play the right way when they host Webster on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays have dropped two consecutive games and are 1-2 on the season. Andrea Zalis is leading the team at 17.3 points per game.
