AROUND THE SLIAC

The Blackburn baseball team has rebounded after four losses to open the year with four straight wins to improve their record to 4-4 this season. The Beavers took the final game of a three game series against Loyola (La.) and followed with a win over Benedictine-Springfield and a sweep of Lincoln Christian. They put their winning streak on the line against first-place Westminster on Friday.
Eureka men's basketball player Seth Wickert was named the Bennett Rank D3 Stud of the Year. Wickert received over half of the 3,300 votes in the national contest. Wickert had previously earned Co-Stud for Week 13 after recording 13 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists against MacMurray. Bennett Rank assists in advancing interest and appreciation for small school athletics and can be found at www.bennettrank.com
The Fontbonne baseball team is off to a 5-5 start this year, and are most recently coming off an 11-1 win over Illinois College on Tuesday. The Griffins are averaging 6.1 runs per game this season and begin SLIAC play with a three game series against Eureka College this weekend. Fontbonne's pitching staff features two of the early SLIAC strikeout leaders in Tanner Carter and Cale Laughlin.
For the second consecutive year the Panther baseball team has been slow out of the gates. The Panthers are just 1-6 this season, after advancing to the SLIAC Tournament Championship game last year. Last season the Panthers started the season 2-7 before finding their stride. The Panthers have one non-conference game this week, against Ripon, before jumping into SLIAC play with a double header against Spalding on Saturday.

The Tiger softball team rolled off three straight wins to conclude their spring break trip to South Carolina, topping Bridgewater, Delaware Valley, and SUNY Poly. The Tigers stand at 4-4 overall this season and return to the Midwest for a SLIAC double header against Blackburn on Saturday. Tiger pitcher Samantha McIlwain has already notched three wins this season, tops in the conference.

MacMurray men's basketball senior Clayton Whitlock was named to the 2014-15 NABC Second Team All-Central District. Whitlock averaged 17.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game this season while leading the conference in scoring and field-goal percentage. He was also named the SLIAC Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference.
Joey Sander was named the SLIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after recording four wins in his return to his home state of California. Sander picked up two singles wins, including a win over regionally ranked Cal Tech, and added two wins in doubles. His only singles loss of the week was a three hour battle against Biola, falling 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6).

Spring break has not been kind to the Spalding softball team, going 1-4 thus far in their games at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Golden Eagles, picked third in the SLIAC preseason poll, will have to right the ship quick as they return from their trip with eight straight conference games including hosting MacMurray and Webster this weekend.

The Webster baseball team made an emphatic return to the D3baseball.com national poll. After falling out of the rankings last week the Gorloks recorded five wins including four victories over ranked opponents. With their success last week the Gorloks pushed their way back into the poll and are now ranked #22 in Division III.
The Westminster softball team started conference action with a double header sweep of Principia this week. The Blue Jays won 10-2 and 10-3 as their bats exploded for season highs in runs scored. Westminster is now 3-6 overall and jumps into a four game non-conference stretch where they host Coe College and Illinois College.
