SLIAC Players of the Week - Sept. 8

This week's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week features several standout individual performances. This week's winners are Thomas Crown, Julio De Leon, Jessica Davis, Jason Hickson, Tayisah Pohtos, Casey Richardson, Tess Rountree, and Jamie Schollenbruch.

MEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Julio De Leon, Spalding University

De Leon, a junior, made his presence known in all three of Spalding's games last week. De Leon scored in each of his team's games finishing the week with three goals on eight shots. He started the week with the game winning goal against Hanover in overtime. He followed with goals against Thomas More and Defiance and was named to the Centre College All-Tournament Team.

MEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Thomas Crown, Greenville College

Crown, a senior goal keeper from St. Louis, Mo., had another solid week in net as he allowed just two goals in two outings. Crown recorded 13 saves in a win over Illinois College, sparking a come from behind win for the Panthers. Crown also recorded four saves against Rose-Hulman, with the only goal coming off a deflection late in the game. On the week Crown finished with a 1.00 goals-against average with 17 saves and an .895 save percentage.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE
Tayisah Pohtos, Westminster College

Pohtos, a junior from St. Louis, Mo., helped Westminster pick up their first win of the season in a 2-0 win over Ozarks. Pohtos netted the only goals of the game, tallying both scores in the second-half.

 

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE
Jessica Davis, Webster University

Davis, a senior goal keeper from Belleville, Ill., continued her hot start to the 2014 season. Davis extended her scoreless minute streak to 253-minutes as she blanked two more opponents this week. Davis picked up a win in her team's 2-0 victory over Benedictine and followed with a four save shutout in her team's scoreless tie against Rhodes.

VOLLEYBALL - OFFENSIVE
Tess Rountree, Principia College

Rountree, a senior from Paso Robles, Calif., was the go to player for the Panthers this week as she averaged over 6 kills per set in four matches. Rountree recorded a pair of 30 kill performances with a week high of 33 kills against St. Olaf. She averaged 6.12 kills in her four matches, hitting .293 on the week and added 3.8 digs per set.

VOLLEYBALL - DEFENSIVE
Jamie Schollenbruch, Greenville College

Schollenbruch, a junior from Decatur, Ill., finished the week averaging just under 10 digs per set. Schollenbruch recorded at least 21 digs in all five of her matches including three 30 dig matches. Her best performance of the week was a 39 dig outing against Benedictine. She finished the week averaging 9.41 digs per set and added 10 service aces.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Jason Hickson, Webster University

Hickson, a senior from Hillsboro, Mo., claimed first place in the Hanover Invitational. Hickson finished the 8k course with a time of 27:28, a 5:32 minute pace. Hickson placed first out of 61 runners and becomes just the third Gorlok to capture a race title in program history.

 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Casey Richardson, Spalding University

Richardson, a junior from Louisville, Ky., led her team at the Queen City Invite last Friday. Richardson posted a time of 20:44 in the 5k race as the Golden Eagles finished 14th at the meet. Her time put her on a 6:40 mile pace for the race.

 

Notable Performances
Cierra Howard, Iowa Wesleyan (Volleyball) Howard recorded 42 digs in a four set loss to Simpson, averaging 10.5 digs per set.

Kersten McDonough, Fontbonne University (Volleyball) McDonough recorded double digit kills in all four of her team's matches last week while also finishing with 45 digs, 11 total blocks and 10 service aces.

Jordan Vehlewald, Webster University (Volleyball) Vehlewald recorded 129 digs in 21 sets this week, averaging 6.14 per set. Her top performance was a 39 dig effort against Southwestern.

Mike Wells, Webster University (Men's Soccer) Wells scored the game winning goal in double overtime as the Gorloks knocked off #11 ranked Wartburg College.
