SLIAC Players of the Week - March 16

We are in full swing for the 2015 spring season and this week's Players of the Week are: Monica Behrle, Tyler Branneky, Kelci Flener, Natalie Foster, Matt Goro, and Joey Sander.

 

SLIAC/DIAMOND SPORTS BASEBALL HITTER OF THE WEEK
Tyler Branneky, Westminster College

Branneky, a junior from St. Louis, Mo., helped the Blue Jays open the SLIAC season with a three game sweep of Eureka. Branneky hit .615 on the week with one home run and five runs batted in. He finished the week with nine runs scored and a .706 on-base percentage with a remarkable 1.154 slugging percentage. Branneky recorded three multi-hit games and the only game in which he did not record a hit, he still managed to walk twice and score three runs. Branneky had two three hit games on the week and tied the Westminster program record for career triples.

 

 

 

SLIAC/DIAMOND SPORTS BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Matt Goro, Webster University

Goro, a sophomore from Sikeston, Mo., put together a memorable performance for the Gorloks, sparking his team. Goro came on in relief in the first inning against #10 ranked Rhodes, after the Gorlok starter issued three walks to start the game. Goro escaped the jam by picking off the runner at first and then proceeded to shut down his ranked opponent. Goro went 8 1/3 innings and allowed just six hits while striking out five and walking none. It marked Goro's longest outing in his career, surpassing his previous high of 2 2/3 innings.

SLIAC SOFTBALL HITTER OF THE WEEK
Natalie Foster, MacMurray College

Foster, a freshman from Warrensburg, Ill., is the SLIAC Softball Hitter of the Week after hitting .522 with six runs batted in on the week. Foster picked up a pinch-hit single in her first collegiate at bat and took that momentum into the rest of the week. She went on to record five multi-hit games including a 3-for-5 performance against Methodist in which she added three runs batted in. Foster finished the week with 12 hits in six games, slugging .696 with a .542 on-base percentage.

 

SLIAC SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Kelci Flener, Spalding University

Flener, a junior from Louisville, Ky., is the SLIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week after helping the Golden Eagles secure a 2-0 win over Mount Saint Vincent, who was picked third in the Skyline Conference Preseason Poll. Flener went the distance, pitching seven scoreless innings and allowing five hits while striking out nine and walking just one.

 

 

SLIAC MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Joey Sander, Principia College

Sander, a junior from Camarillo, Calif., had a busy week of spring break, playing in six matches. Sander returned to his home state and recorded four wins on the week including two singles wins. Sander's most impressive win came against regionally ranked opponent Cal Tech where he notched a 7-5, 6-4 victory at #2 singles. He followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the same spot against Hope International and added a pair of doubles wins against Biola and Hope. His only singles loss of the week came in a three hour long batttle against Biola, losing 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6).

SLIAC WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Monica Behrle, Webster University

Behrle, a freshman from Atlanta, Ga., continued her impressive collegiate start as she went 5-1 last week including three singles victories. Behrle started the week with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan at the #2 singles spot. Behrle then stepped up into the #1 position and notched two more wins, defeating Dickinson 6-1, 7-5 and Heidelberg 6-3, 7-5. In addition Behrle recorded two wins at #2 doubles. She is now 17-6 overall this season including 11-1 in singles play.

Notable Performances:

  • Jeff Burdett, Iowa Wesleyan College (Baseball) Burdett recorded two wins this week, throwing 14 scoreless innings over two games.
  • Alyson Hahn, Westminster College (Softball) Hahn notched a complete game victory over Stephens, finishing with eight strikeouts.
  • Deion Hughes, Westminster College (Baseball) Hughes picked up a win this week with a shutout victory over Eureka going seven innings and striking out nine while allowing just three hits.
  • Aaron Krummrich, MacMurray College (Baseball) Krummrich openes the season with an impressive 4-for-5 performance against Olivet, driving in six. 
  • Kory Vire, Spalding University (Baseball) Vire went 4-for-5 with two doubles and five runs batted in during a 14-9 win over Redlands.
  • Erica Wilson, Blackburn College (Softball) Wilson recorded three hits in a double header against Williams Baptist College with one run scored.
