For the second consecutive year MacMurray College is the SLIAC/SAAC Community Service Award winner. The Highlanders won the annual canned food drive competition by collecting over 1,700 cans this year, winning both the fall and winter collection drives, including a conference record of 1,122 items during the fall.
SLIAC members collected a grand total of 7,108 cans this year, which were then delivered to local food pantries in their communities. Five different institutions collected over 600 cans this year; MacMurray, Westminster College, Blackburn College, Principia College, Iowa Wesleyan College, and Greenville College. Westminster won the spring collection drive with 510 canned food items while Fontbonne and Blackburn came in second and third during the spring drive period.
The SAAC Community Service Award was first awarded last year, and is presented to the school who collects the most canned food items during the school year. The goal is to give back to the community and further develop citizenship among its student-athletes. Each institution and their SAAC committee will hold canned food drives throughout the year, with the collected donations going to a local food pantry. Collection periods end during the last weekend of the regular season for the respective sports. Cash donations are also accepted with every dollar donated counting as two canned food items. The competition is divided into three collection periods; the fall season, the winter season, and the spring season.
