Two SLIAC Hall of Fame induction ceremonies are scheduled to take place
this week. Two former women's soccer standouts will be inducted,
including Principia's Julie (Record) Holser and Webster's Niki
Martinez. Holser will be inducted Tuesday (Jan. 29) evening in
between games when the Panthers host Maryville University at 6:00 pm
(women) and 8:00 pm (men). Martinez will be inducted Saturday (Feb. 2)
afternoon in between the Gorloks' double header with Principia - 1:00 pm
(men) and 3:00 pm (women).
The real buzz around the SLIAC this week is what is going to happen in
the men's basketball standings. Fontbonne University, who is currently
riding a 10-game win streak, handed Westminster College their first
conference loss and stand at 7-1 and in second place in the SLIAC. The
Blue Jays went on to drop another conference game on the road at
Greenville College, falling to 6-2 in conference play and third place in
the standings. Webster University is the lone men's squad to remain
undefeated in conference play. The Gorloks (7-0) are on the road at
Westminster this week and could see the tables turn on them as quickly
as they did on the Blue Jays last week.
There's more excitement among the men's squads, as Maryville and Eureka
College both sit with five wins. The Saints will travel to Eureka on
Saturday to try and complete the conference series sweep for the season.
Greenville (4-4) is also trying to inch their way up the standings and
will try and upset Fontbonne at home this week.
On the women's side, Maryville stands at 8-0 in the SLIAC and extended
their regular season conference win streak to 68 games with two wins
last week, including a road victory at Webster. Greenville is in second
place with only one loss (to the Saints), and the Panthers are gearing
up to host Fontbonne (6-2) this Wednesday. Eureka is currently in fourth
place with a 4-5 conference record, while Principia and Blackburn
College are still hopeful at 3-5 each. |
