BLACKBURN NAMES KIRK CHANDLER AS DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Blackburn College has announced the naming of Kirk Chandler to the
position of Director of Athletics at the school.
In addition to his new position, Chandler will also remain as head men’s
basketball coach at Blackburn. He completed his first season at the
helm of the Beavers in February. As Director of
Athletics, Chandler succeeds Curtis Campbell, who resigned after two
years in the position to become Director of Athletics at Stillman
College, an NCAA Division II program in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Already a respected member of the campus
community, Chandler came to Blackburn in June 2006 after spending twelve
years as head men’s basketball coach at Averett University in Danville,
Va., where he also served for five years as assistant athletic director
as well as head coach of Averett’s nationally recognized golf team.
Prior to his time at Averett, Chandler served one-year stints as
assistant men’s basketball coach at Barton College and St. Andrews
Presbyterian College, both in North Carolina, and spent two years as an
assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of North
Carolina-Greensboro, an NCAA Division I program.
A 1981 graduate of Elon University in North Carolina with a B.S. in
Physical Education, Chandler earned an M.S. in Health and Physical
Education from North Carolina A& T in 1989. He and his wife, Deborah,
are the parents of two children, Grant, 16, and Carley, 11.
Founded in 1837, Blackburn College is a
four-year, Presbyterian-related, co- educational liberal arts college
located 40 miles south of Springfield, IL. The College is one of six
“work program colleges” in the nation where students are required to
work in jobs instrumental to the College’s daily operations. The work
program receives widespread recognition in American higher education and
helps to keep Blackburn’s tuition the lowest of all private colleges in
Illinois and among the lowest in the United States.
