WOMEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP ENDS IN A TIE; WEBSTER ADVANCES ON PK'S

ST. LOUIS - Women's soccer fans witnessed a battle to the very end, as the No. 1 Webster University Gorloks and No. 3 Maryville University Saints ended in a 2-2 tie in the 2007 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament Championship. The match may go down as a tie on the two team's overall records, but Webster came out on top and claimed the tournament crown after posting a 4-1 advantage in penalty kicks.

The Gorloks came into the game looking for their first win of the season versus the Saints, who had defeated them twice during the regular season. Webster struck first, with Christy Capkovic netting her 20th goal of the season just seven minutes into the first period. Breanna Cashel and Rashonda Stanley recorded the double assist on the goal.

It did not take long for the Saints to find an answer to Webster's goal. Maryville took advantage of one of their seven corner kicks for the game, as Lauren Dieckmann scored her fourth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. The Saints later took the lead in the 37th minute when Amy Klein knocked in a loose ball on the goal line, giving Maryville a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.

Webster's defense dominated in the second period, holding the Saints to only two shots. Maryville's defense was just as strong early on in the period, but Capkovic found the back of the net again in the 73rd minute on a shot off a restart from 20 yards out to tie the game for the second time at 2-2.

After two scoreless overtime periods, each team selected five players to participate in a shootout that ultimately determined the tournament champion. Webster's Stacey Schuler hit the first penalty kick, followed by a good shot by Maryville's Jackie Haas. Lindsay Raftery and Kelsey McClure netted the next two penalty kicks for the Gorloks, but Maryville's Christi Lindsay had her shot sail over the goal and Megan McCabe's shot was deflected by Webster goalkeeper Jessica Kozeny, giving the Gorloks a 3-1 advantage. Capkovic put away the fourth and deciding shot for the Gorloks, as Webster claimed their third consecutive tournament championship, including their second consecutive championship that was decided in a shootout.

Kozeny recorded four saves in goal, while Maryville's Kendria Boddie had six saves. The Gorloks also finished with a 21-13 shot advantage, including 18-10 in regulation.

Webster will now advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament with the automatic qualifying bid. The Gorloks find out who they will face in the first round of the tournament on Monday, November 5, when the tournament bracket is released.
