MEN'S, WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT FIELDS SET
ST. LOUIS - The 2007 Men's and Women's St. Louis Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament fields have been set. Principia
College grabbed the top seed in the men's field, after finishing the
regular season with a perfect 9-0 record in conference play. Webster
University's claimed the No. 1 seed on the women's side after a winning
the tie-breaker in a three-way tie with Principia and Maryville
University (Mo.). The Principia men will be
making their 12th overall appearance in the conference tournament. Their
lone SLIAC Tournament Championship was in 1990 when they were also the
No. 1 seed. The Panthers are 9-10-0 overall in conference tournament
action.
Westminster College (Mo.) claimed the No. 2
seed. The Blue Jays have made 10 tournament appearances and are 1-10-0
overall. No. 3 Fontbonne University is the defending SLIAC Tournament
champion. The Griffins are no stranger to being the underdog after being
seeded fourth last season and winning two straight games to claim the
crown. They have made 11 appearances in the conference tournament and
are 12-7-1 overall. Maryville grabbed the fourth
and final spot, and will be making their first tournament appearance
since 1998. The Saints, who are 16-5-1 in tournament play, will be
making their 10th appearance in the SLIAC Tournament. Both Maryville and
Fontbonne hold the most tournament titles with four.
Webster's women's squad will be looking for their third consecutive
conference tournament championship. The Gorloks, who are 5-2-1 all-time
in the tournament, will only be making their fifth appearance.
Principia claimed the No. 2 seed on the women's side to earn first round
hosting rights. The Panthers hold the most tournament titles (6), with
their last tournament championship coming in 2004. They are 19-4-2 in
tournament play and have made 12 total appearances.
No. 3 Maryville will try to claim their first conference tournament
title since 1999. The Saints have also made 12 tournament appearances
and are 11-8-1 overall. Greenville rounds out the field of four and will
look to capture their first conference tournament victory. The Panthers
are 0-5-0 in five tournament appearances.
