Westminster Tennis Teams, Two Seniors Bow In NCAA First Round

FULTON, Mo. - Both the Westminster College men and women saw their seasons come to an end in the first round of play in their respective NCAA Division III national tennis tournaments Friday.

The Blue Jay men (13-7) dropped a 5-0 decision to Carthage College of Kenosha, Wisconsin at the King’s Point Racquet Club in Belleville, Illinois. The match was scheduled to be held at Washington University in St. Louis, but was moved inside because of rain. Westminster’s lone senior, Andrew Darkow (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge), played in his final collegiate match. During his career, Darkow earned all-conference honors four consecutive years playing on four consecutive conference champion teams which qualified for the national tournament each of the past three seasons.

The Westminster women (10-10) were topped 5-0 by Grinnell College of Grinnell, Iowa, in NCAA first round play at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Senior Abby Stuck (Booneville, Mo./Boonville) completed her four-year career. Stuck earned all-conference first-team honors this season and was a part of conference champion teams in 2006 and this year which included the team’s first NCAA tournament appearance.
